Why Is My Hair So Dry? Here's What's Actually Going On

If you've tried every moisturizing product you can find and your hair is still dry, brittle, or frizzy, you're not imagining it. Dry hair is one of the most common things we hear about at Hairpins & Scissors, and the frustrating part is that there's usually more than one thing causing it. The wrong products aren't always the problem. Sometimes it's the water. Sometimes it's the air. Sometimes it's both.

Here's what's actually going on.

Your Water Might Be Working Against You

Albuquerque has some of the hardest water in the country. Hard water is high in minerals, especially calcium and magnesium, and when that water runs through your hair every time you shower, those minerals build up on the hair shaft over time.

That buildup does two things. It coats the outside of your hair, which makes it harder for moisture to actually get in. And it makes the surface of your hair feel rough and look dull. A lot of clients come in thinking they need a heavier conditioner when what they actually need is to address the buildup first.

This is one of the reasons we put a clarifying shampoo at the beginning of every routine we build. Not as an everyday wash, but as a regular reset — once a week or every other week, depending on how your hair responds. It clears the slate so that everything you put on after it can actually do its job.

The Climate Is Not on Your Side Either

Living in the high desert means the air around you is consistently dry. Low humidity pulls moisture out of your hair continuously, not just when it's hot outside. Your hair can absorb water during a shower and start losing it again before you even finish getting ready.

This is why products that work beautifully for someone in a more humid climate can feel like they're not doing anything here. It's not that the product is bad. It's that your hair is losing moisture faster than those products were formulated to replace.

In Albuquerque, sealing moisture in matters as much as adding it. A good serum applied while hair is still damp creates a barrier that slows that process down. It doesn't stop it, but it gives the moisture you added somewhere to stay.

Heat and Sun Damage Add Up

New Mexico's sun is intense, and UV exposure damages the outer layer of your hair over time. That outer layer, called the cuticle, is what keeps moisture inside the strand. Heat tools do the same kind of damage. Not always dramatically or all at once, but consistently over time. A good heat protectant applied every single time before any heat is non-negotiable, especially here.

Your Shampoo Might Be the Problem

Shampoos with sulfates clean thoroughly, which sounds like a good thing, but sulfates don't discriminate. They strip out oil, product, and buildup, but they also strip the natural oils your hair needs to stay moisturized. For someone with dry hair in a dry climate, that's too aggressive for regular use.

If you're washing with a sulfate shampoo every day or even every other day and your hair is dry, this is likely making things worse. A sulfate-free wash used a few times a week is almost always a better combination for the hair types we see here.
