If Your Hair Isn't Growing, Start With Your Scalp
Share
Most people think about hair growth as a hair problem. They try serums, vitamins, biotin gummies, and new shampoos. What they don't usually think about is the scalp, which is where every strand of hair actually begins.
If your hair is growing slowly, breaking before it gets long, thinning at the part or crown, or just not behaving the way it used to, the scalp is almost always worth looking at first. Here's what we tell our clients, and the routine we put together to address it.

Why the Scalp Gets Overlooked
The scalp is skin. It has follicles, a moisture barrier, oil production, and a microbiome just like the rest of your skin, but most people treat it as an afterthought in their hair care routine. You shampoo it, condition the ends, and move on.
The problem is that a scalp dealing with buildup, dryness, excess oil, or irritation can't do its job properly. Hair follicles that are clogged with product residue, hard water minerals, or excess sebum are working in a compromised environment. Hair that grows from an irritated, inflamed scalp often grows in weaker, breaks sooner, and sheds more than it should.
Albuquerque's hard water makes this worse than it would be in most cities. The high mineral content in our water leaves deposits on both the hair shaft and the scalp over time, and those deposits don't rinse away with regular shampooing. They accumulate. For clients who have been in the area for years and wonder why their hair has changed, hard water buildup is very often part of the answer.
What Scalp Health Actually Looks Like
A healthy scalp is balanced: not too oily, not too dry, not irritated or inflamed. The skin is clear and the follicles are open. Hair that grows from a healthy scalp tends to grow at a normal rate, feel strong from the root, and shed at the normal daily rate rather than in concerning amounts.
Signs that your scalp needs more attention include flaking or dandruff that isn't going away with regular shampoo, persistent dryness or itching, a feeling of tightness or tenderness, oiliness that returns too quickly after washing, and noticeable thinning or shedding that's changed from your normal. None of these are permanent. They're signals, and they respond well to the right routine.
The Routine We Recommend
The Innersense Hair Renew line was built specifically for scalp health, and it's the most complete scalp system we carry. Each step addresses a different part of the problem: preparation, deep treatment, and ongoing daily care. Here's how the routine works.

Before You Even Get in the Shower
The Hair Renew Scalp Oil is a pre-wash treatment applied to the dry scalp before shampooing. Most scalp products work on the surface — this one goes deeper. Applied 12 hours before washing (the night before wash day works well), the lightweight oil feeds follicles with omega fatty acids from Sesame and Sunflower Seed oils, repairs the moisture barrier, and calms dryness and irritation at the root level. It gets rinsed completely clean when you shampoo, so there's no residue left behind. It simply does its job and washes away.
Step 1: Night Before
Innersense Hair Renew Scalp Oil
A pre-wash nourishing oil applied to the dry scalp before shampooing. Sesame and Sunflower Seed oils feed follicles, repair the moisture barrier, and calm itching and dryness at the root. Apply 12 hours before washing and rinse clean in the shower. Not a leave-in. Rinse it fully and follow with your regular shampoo.
Right Before You Shampoo
The Hair Renew Pre Wash Treatment is a scalp prep applied immediately before shampooing, on a wet or dry scalp. Zinc Gluconate and Magnesium Oil balance oil production and dissolve the kind of buildup — product residue, mineral deposits, excess sebum — that regular shampoo doesn't fully clear. Micro Hyaluronic Acid replenishes hydration and calms scalp irritation. You leave it on for at least five minutes before rinsing, then follow with your regular shampoo. Think of it as a clarifying step for your scalp specifically — not your strands.
Step 2: Before Shampoo
Innersense Hair Renew Pre Wash Treatment
A scalp prep applied before shampooing that dissolves buildup and balances oil production. Zinc Gluconate, Magnesium Oil, and Micro Hyaluronic Acid clear congestion, replenish hydration, and calm irritation. Apply to the scalp, leave five minutes, rinse, then shampoo as normal. Especially effective for hard water buildup and flaking.
In the Shower
The Hair Renew Scalp Hairbath is the shampoo built to work within this system, formulated specifically for scalp-sensitive hair. It lathers gently with plant-derived and certified organic ingredients, using Rosemary and Peppermint to stimulate circulation at the follicle while cleansing without disrupting the scalp's moisture balance. It's gentle enough to use after the Pre Wash Treatment without stripping what you just applied. Follow it with the Hair Renew Soothing Conditioner, which replenishes hydration from root to end with Aloe Vera and botanical extracts, no silicones, no coating. Just calm, hydrated hair.
Step 3: Shampoo
Innersense Hair Renew Scalp Hairbath
A scalp-specific shampoo with Rosemary, Peppermint, and certified organic plant actives that stimulate follicles and cleanse without stripping. Designed to work alongside the Pre Wash Treatment and the rest of the Hair Renew system. Gentle enough for regular use, effective enough to clear the buildup standard shampoos leave behind.
Step 3: Conditioner
Innersense Hair Renew Soothing Conditioner
A calming, silicone-free conditioner that pairs with the Scalp Hairbath to complete the in-shower step. Aloe Vera and botanical extracts replenish moisture and smooth the hair while keeping the scalp calm rather than irritated. Detangles and softens without weighing hair down or leaving any residue that would undo the Pre Wash prep.
After Washing, Every Day Between

The Hair Renew Daily Active Serum is the between-wash step, the part of scalp care that most people skip because they don't realize it exists. Applied daily to the scalp between washes, it uses Tea Tree and Hemp Seed oils alongside Pea Sprout Extract to deeply moisturize, reverse scalp dryness, and fortify follicles over time. Just 4 to 6 drops directly to the scalp after washing or on off-days. It's lightweight enough that it doesn't weigh hair down or cause oiliness.
Step 4: Daily
Innersense Hair Renew Daily Active Serum
A daily leave-on scalp serum applied between washes. Tea Tree and Hemp Seed Oils plus Pea Sprout Extract deeply moisturize the scalp, reverse dryness, and fortify follicles over time. 4 to 6 drops directly to the scalp, no rinsing. Lightweight enough to wear every day without buildup or greasiness. The ongoing maintenance step that makes the whole system work.
The Full System Together
If you want to start with the full Hair Renew routine, the Treatment Duo bundles the Pre Wash Treatment and Daily Active Serum together at a savings. It's the easiest way to get into the complete system and see how your scalp responds over a few weeks.
The Complete System
Innersense Hair Renew Scalp Treatment Duo
The Pre Wash Treatment and Daily Active Serum bundled together, valued at $80 and available for $64. The Pre Wash clears buildup before shampooing. The Daily Active Serum maintains scalp health between washes. Together they create the optimal environment for healthy hair growth. Pairs well with the Scalp Oil as a weekly add-on. One note: Innersense launched this duo as part of the initial Hair Renew release and we're not certain how long it will be available. If you've been on the fence, now is the time to grab it.
How Long Before You See a Difference
The first thing most people notice is that flaking and dryness calm down within the first two to three washes. The deeper changes (less shedding, improved density, hair that feels stronger from the root) take longer, usually six to eight weeks of consistent use. Hair growth is a slow process, and scalp health is something you build rather than fix overnight.
That said, clients who stick with the Hair Renew routine consistently are the ones who come back and tell us their hair feels different at the root: fuller, less brittle, with noticeably less shedding in the shower. That's the result of a scalp that's actually working the way it's supposed to.
